Speaking of the tattoos, is Ichiban's really meant to be a fusion between Kiryu's and Nishiki's? How do you feel about the "Ichiban is Nishiki's second chance\reincarnation" theory that's popular in the fandom? I really like it, it feels intentional with how Ichiban has the same VA, is also a very sensitive guy and even has a similar suit to what Nishiki had in 0. A koi 'being born again' as a dragonfish feels poetic and like it would complete Nishiki's arc of transformation, ending it in a brighter note. If that theory is true I hope they'll reference it in Y8 and that Ichiban will remind Kiryu of Nishiki.

Nakaya himself had a lot to say on that subject in an interview. He loves them both deeply, but they’re totally different people to him. At most, he’s thought a lot about what it could be like if they met apparently 🤧
Edit: here’s the talk
That full transcript is amazing and everyone that likes Nishiki (& Ichiban!) should read it tbh Nakaya’s thoughts on his characters are so much fun. This is another of my favorite parts:
And when it comes to Ichiban being reincarnated Nishiki, it’s impossible because Ichiban was already like, 26 years old and in jail when Nishiki died. He went to jail at 22 years old in 2001, Nishiki died in 2005, so. The timeline just doesn’t match.

Do the tattoo artists really pick the tattoos for yakuza? In Kiwami 2 it seemed that way with how Ryuji got his gold dragon because the artist got a feeling that he should be tattooed with it. Utabori showing up with a dragon design for Kiryu and a fish design for Nishiki must've been the real beginning of his joker arc lol

The view of his tattoo being something as simple as a loser vs winner story is unfortunately incredibly common, but the koi has very important meaning in Japan. With how Nishiki and Kiryu are in 0, it’s very likely that they could have possibly viewed their tattoos as a matching pair until it started to represent their deep divide in 1. Also, Aikawa has one too, but it’s black. It should go without saying that the colors here clearly have different meanings
I sadly don’t know the irl tattoo artist’s thoughts that went into crafting Nishiki’s koi. I also can’t remember his name atm 💀 But I’ve seen a bit of him talking at length about everything Mine’s tattoo symbolizes for example. Their tats aren’t supposed to represent who sucks and who’s good at everything. They’re just a symbol of who they are, and also in Nishiki’s case, be an example of fate due to the story of the koi trying to turn into a dragon
Seeing it as “Oh Nishiki got the "you’ll never be him” tattoo" is doing it such a disservice honestly. It’s a gorgeous tattoo and even Utabori tells Kiryu that they’re equal in power in a cutscene where he retouches the dragon. Koi fish aren’t just the loser fish, they’re seen as a symbol of power, bravery and in the case of the red koi also motherhood (probably because of Yuko) and intense love. Like, it’s a representation of who Nishiki is just as Kiryu’s dragon is of who Kiryu is. It’s not inferior, it’s just different and means different things.
